Lynn Gifford Bria

Lynn Gifford Bria advises clients on estate, trust, philanthropic and real estate issues with a focus on preservation and protection of assets for intended beneficiaries. She has developed a reputation as a tireless advocate for her clients. With courtroom experience and involvement in a wide range of fiduciary matters, Lynn built her reputation by handling difficult family matters for trustees, executors and beneficiaries, such as contested probate matters and complex real estate conveyances.

Lynn previously served as Vice President and Senior Trust Officer at a large banking and investment institution. There she exercised oversight of client accounts including revocable, irrevocable, and charitable trusts. Lynn’s work for clients included estate tax planning and analysis of client objectives to plan overall trust accounting, distribution and cash management strategies for multiple generations.

When asked to identify her favorite part of practicing law, Lynn answers without hesitation: building relationships with her clients. Lynn takes a hands-on approach to handling each and every matter she accepts and her clients are comforted that Lynn is intimately involved at every stage

— from planning to administration with multiple generations, from negotiation to settlement or litigation where matters require. Lynn values every relationships she establishes.

Notable Experience

  • Lynn has assisted several families in an advisory capacity and as a trustee during periods of significant wealth transfer and ongoing trust administration. She enjoys working with corporate trustees and trusted financial advisors, favoring a team approach to address personal planning and wealth preservation concerns for clients.
  • Lynn assisted in the resolution of a forty-year dispute involving a large parcel of land spanning two states. Through probate court action to correct the impact of a prior order on the trust/owner’s generation skipping transfer tax grandfathered status, the trust beneficiaries were able to reach an agreement to sell the land with tax-free compensation for several generations of surviving family members.
  • Lynn has represented fiduciaries navigating complex corporate succession, transfer and renunciation of distressed or environmentally contaminated real estate, and the transition of insolvent entities into receivership or special mastership.

More About Lynn

  • Lynn represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an Assistant District Attorney, prosecuting criminal matters in Bristol County. She also previously practiced with a midsize Rhode Island law firm, focusing on estate planning and probate litigation.
  • Lynn still finds time to contribute to the community. She is an active member of the Rhode Island Bar’s Probate and Trust Committee, a board member for the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, and a former member of Save the Bay’s Legal Committee. She enjoys travel, gardening, skiing, sailing and spending lots of time with her husband, Peter, and their two children.
