Tax Planning Strategies For High Net Worth Individuals
If you have significant wealth, own a business or are planning for the transfer of assets to the next generation, early tax planning is vital. High net worth individuals usually face complex challenges involving income taxes, gift taxes and generation-skipping transfer tax. Without a coordinated strategy, these issues can create unnecessary tax exposure and complicate the preservation of family wealth.
Our estate planning lawyers can develop tax planning strategies that effectively protect your assets, reduce tax burdens and support long-term generational wealth transfer. We will work with your financial advisers to ensure that your plan is well-aligned with your lifestyle and personal goals.
Protecting Wealth Through Lifetime Planning
Effective tax planning is not just about what happens after death; it begins during your lifetime. By planning with counsel early, you can reduce your future tax exposure, preserve your wealth and create a smoother transition for the next generation.
Depending on your goals, we may recommend strategies such as annual gifting, strategic asset transfers, charitable giving and family limited partnerships. These estate planning tools can help you maintain greater control over your assets and support your family’s needs.
Preserving Your Legacy
Even after death, careful administration of an estate can help reduce the immediate tax burden on heirs and safeguard your legacy. The way assets are valued, distributed and coordinated through your estate plan can have a significant impact on the taxes your beneficiaries may face.
By using living trusts, beneficiary designations and other planning tools, we can help ensure that your assets are transferred as efficiently as possible. This approach can protect inherited wealth and provide your loved ones with stability during a challenging time.
Rhode Island Estate And Gift Tax Considerations
Estate planning should take both federal and state tax laws into account since the rules and exemption amounts are not the same. For Rhode Island decedents who passed away on or after January 1, 2026, their estate tax credit amount is $87,940, which exempts the first $1,838,056 of an estate from Rhode Island’s estate tax.
In general, that means a net taxable estate valued at $1,838,056 or less will not be subject to estate taxes.
